utah elections procedures study (2022)

League of Women Voters of Utah took an in-depth look at Utah’s voting and election procedures, including a review of relevant statues, responses to a survey of Utah’s county clerks, and media statements made by election officials. You can read the full study here.

Some of our conclusions:

  • Our research shows that there are layers of protection in Utah to ensure that only eligible voters are casting ballots.

  • We need to combat misinformation about ineligible voters casting ballots. The Lieutenant Governors Office has a significant role to play in providing transparent information.

  • There are always improvements to be made including

    • improved county election officials understanding of security safeguards,

    • counties learning from each other how to better “cure” ballots when a discrepancy is found,

    • streamlining the way for ballots put in the wrong drop box to get to the correct county.

The League of Women Voters is proud of the work of the study committee. We will never be done with our work to empower voters and defend democracy.
