What Does This Special Session Mean?

The legislature has promised a constitutional amendment which would doubtless take away any co-legislating rights from Utah citizens. And of course, they have vowed to continue with their appeals.

If you are wondering where our case stands in the face of these continued attacks, here are a few points:

Current status:

  • The map is legal and fair and the Lt. Governor is moving forward to implement a remedial map that complies with Prop 4

  • We're grateful all Utahns will vote under a fair, legal, representative map next year

The Legislature’s response:

  • At every step the Legislature has ignored the will of the people and violated the Constitution to try to keep power for themselves.

  • The Legislature is creating chaos, not the courts. The people have spoken, the courts have spoken, and it’s time for the Legislature to listen to the people they represent.

  • The law in Utah requires fair maps. The Legislature had multiple chances to pass a legal map, and they failed.

About the proposed constitutional amendment:

  • Utahns are proud to have a constitution that gives a voice to the people and we'll continue to protect that right in court, at the ballot box, and in all our work.

About the appeal:

The Legislature has said they plan to appeal, and we look forward to making the same common-sense arguments based firmly on the Utah constitution that we’ve made at every stage of this litigation.
