Register, Redistrict, Repeat
You may wonder how to direct your activism at a time of chaos and changing rules. Take a deep breath and remember that nothing happens overnight. The League of Women Voters is committed to thoughtful, studied advocacy. We do not take the important work we do lightly.
Yes, so much is coming at us now – and it is intentionally designed to distract. Here is my suggestion: resist distraction. What matters to you? The League is multi-faceted and can often be overwhelming in its reach. But choose an issue and leave the rest to others.
Most recently, the LWVUS received a policy alert from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services which states “that only state and local election officials are permitted to provide voter registration services at the conclusion of an administrative naturalization ceremony. Nongovernmental entities are not permitted to provide voter registration services at USCIS facilities during naturalization ceremonies.”
Our CEO Celina Stewart has called upon USCIS to reverse this decision. ““By shutting out the League and other civic partners, USCIS is making it harder for new citizens to register to vote, which is yet another intimidation tactic and attack on the immigrant community. Our democracy is stronger with the voices of new citizens.”
All of our leagues are considering how to move forward as we continue to register voters wherever they may be.
Next, our league is dealing with a moving target in the form of the redistricting lawsuit – League of Women Voters of Utah vs. Utah State Legislature. We celebrated a significant victory when 3rd District Judge Dianna Gibson ruled that the legislature must abide by Proposition 4 but there are many moving parts before we land on fair congressional maps. We hope that this can be accomplished before the 2026 election.
In the meantime, check out my blog here on redistricting for updates. Be sure to look at our website periodically, too, for the most up-to-date information on our studies, the legislature, and be sure to upload League in Action for our action alerts.
