As we enter 2025.

December 17, 2024

That should be all I need to say, but as members of the League of Women Voters, we know there is work to be done. 2025 will open the door to a new administration and we must be ready to advocate. Our recent leaders call with National underlines the need to be strategic and patient.

President Dianna Wynn emphasized the importance of working with allies and partners to leverage our collective power at the grassroots. During this time, we will not only be planning our work for the first 100 days, but also evaluating which fights are ours and how to protect our allies who may be under attack. This calls for discipline, grace, and flexibility.

We know there will be an attack on government regulations and we will need to advance our plans for communications and educational campaigns. That said, there will be limited opportunity for litigation.

Our national League divided the country by state, highlighting what we should focus on. In Utah, it is “Civic Education + Engagement; Push back against voting restrictions.” Thos are our marching orders.

Expected in the First 100 Days:

  • Mass Deportations Funding

  • Stringent Budget Cuts/Tax Cuts

  • Attempts to Eliminate Citizenship Protections

  • Attacks on nonprofit organizations

  • Restrictive Voting Rights Laws

To our members throughout the state, we also must protect our strategy – both locally and nationally. I am asking you to take this to heart and not to share this broadly. The state League will also likely be defending our redistricting lawsuit in the lower courts.

On January 18, we are being asked to join the People’s March wherever we may be. At this time, there are marches planned for Salt Lake City and Moab – and of course, Washington, D.C. If you know of others, please let us know.

While this seems like a lot, we do not truly know what’s coming and we should be ready to acknowledge positive actions, too.

— Katharine Biele, LWV Utah President
