Join us for the League of Women Voters of Salt Lake February General Meeting. We will explore whether the 2nd Amendment is a sacred right and how it informs the gun culture in our nation.
Wayne McCormack, Professor of Law at the University of Utah College Of Law, will take us on a journey through time and across the continents. You will hear about Australia’s success in disposing of non-hunting weapons and of the influx of weapons to Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union. The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will be front and center in the discussion of 2nd Amendment rights and its often conflicting interpretations. Let’s not forget about the National Rifle Association and Russia.
Professor McCormack teaches Constitutional Law, Counter-Terrorism, International Criminal Law, Torts, Judicial Process, and Civil Procedure. From 1997-2002 he coordinated the U’s involvement with the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and that experience led to security planning for major events and interest in international legal issues, including the law related to terrorism.
