Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

  1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a member of the House of Representatives for the people of Utah ?

As a representative, I intend to ensure that every child has a quality education. I will also work to enact ethics reform and accountability in our State Legislature.

  2. How would you address the following issues? (Please answer each question in 200 words or less.)
    - Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates

As an educator myself, this is a top issue for me.  Priorities for education funding should be focused on classroom size reduction, attracting and retaining the best teachers, and increasing per pupil spending to match the rest of the country

    - Energy resource development and clean air

As energy prices continue to rise, it is evident that we must stop relying on foreign oil as our only fuel source.  With abundant renewable energy resources, Utah needs to move forward by becoming a leader in promoting renewable energy development.  Also, our children deserve clean air and water.  It is our responsibility to protect our air and water from contaminants and preserve our natural surroundings for every citizen.

    - Water development and conservation

Water conservation should be a high prioity and every Utahn needs to help ensure that we have abundant water.  Comprehensive conservation efforts should be made by residents, government, and businesses.  Water development remains an importand aspect in ensuring that the state will have enough water.

    - Better communication between elected officials and their constituents

Representatives need to be available to their constituents by phone, mail and e-mail contact throughout their term as a State Legislator.  Town hall meetings, surveys, and newsletters are also very helpful in establishing good communication.  I plan to be a true representative of the citizens in my district.

  3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money? (Response should include $______________ for ________________________________.

Our first priority should be reducing the tax burden for Utah families.  Allocating additional funds should focus on necessary items such as education, public safety, and law enforcement.
