Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

  1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a member of the House of Representatives for the people of Utah ?

Reclaim legislative influence on behalf of the Foothill area as part of SLC, redirecting the agenda to benefit the capital city in support of Gov. Huntsman's economic development initiatives.

Provide a business-oriented perspective to the legislature. "Invest in Utah" through economic development, as an advocate for the UofU, supporting quality public education, and through responsible fiscal management of the state's limited resources.

  2. How would you address the following issues? (Please answer each question in 200 words or less.)
    - Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates

Quality public education has been an important element to the reputation of the Foothill area as the place to raise famililes.  Unfortunately, disturbing drop-out rates are threatening that reputation.  Priority funding should be made available to recruit and retain well-trained educators to teach the growing diversity of SLC's student population.  Further, additional guidance counselors should be available to support the goal of greater graduation rates.  Funding for these two initiatives will be available, resulting from the successful economic development efforts.

    - Energy resource development and clean air

Our short-sighted nature has prevented even responsible energy resource development within our state and neighboring states.  It is time to make an effort to explore our local energy development potential.  While such efforts will have minimal short-term impact, individuals will make responsible conservation decisions based on personal financial consequences.  Personal conservation will have a positive impact on environmental issues such as clean air.  Other alternative energy sources should also be explored.  Energy self-sufficieny is a worthwhile goal to pursue.

    - Water development and conservation

Elected officials are forward thinking and have sought to ensure water availability through the Central Utah Water Project.

    - Better communication between elected officials and their constituents

In 2008, legislative results were generally more positive than the public perceived but not as positive as the elected officials would like to believe.  Effective communication is needed to bring the constituents and elected officials together --- the responsibility is upon the elected officials to remain accessible to consituents and assertive in reporting the results.  Unfortunately, the media frequently misrepresents and distorts the perspectives of both the elected officials and the constituents to create news-making controversies.

  3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money? (Response should include $______________ for ________________________________.

    1. $25 million
    2. $25 million
    3. $25 million
    4. $25 million
    1. Sales tax reduction on food and property tax reduction for Seniors.
    2. Hiring bilingual teachers and guidance counselors for urban public schools - and expand the support for parent involved Charter schools.
    3. Economic Development incentives --- for post- performance incentives to attract corporate relocating to urban downtown locations and for energy development intitiatives for Utah based exploration.
    4. Technology Investment and Education in public schools, higher education and to create efficiency in delivering state services.
