Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

  1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a member of the House of Representatives for the people of Utah ?

If elected, I would like to secure permanent ongoing funding to provide a consistent increase to education, both in operations and ion salaries. I would also hope to redefine the campaign finance rules and rules as they apply to gifts from lobbyists.

  2. How would you address the following issues? (Please answer each question in 200 words or less.)
    - Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates

Education funding - Businesses are the first to criticize the educational system for not preparing students for the workplace, yet are first in line to lobby for and receive tax breaks, benefits, and exemptions. Businesses should be willing to pay their fair share without regard to any special status they desire to receive. In short, there should be equitable taxes for all business across the board.
Each major district should have a plan to teach English to non-English speaker through an immersion program. At the point where the student can demonstrate competence in the English language, they would be entitled to enter the public school system. Too many non-English speakers drag the classes down to where adequate progress cannot be made. The prison educational system needs to train and teach the inmates for profitable employment beyond incarceration. If there is no hope for them to earn more than minimum wage, they will quickly return to their illegal ways.

    - Energy resource development and clean air

Energy - We have an abundance of natural resources in Utah and more must be done to work with the Federal government to release lands for development, at the same time maintaining reasonable environmental standards. We have the right and privilege of having both the abundance of resources and the wisdom to use them responsibly.

    - Water development and conservation

Without immediate and imminent means to provide water to communities, restraint should be placed on development and efforts should be focused towards conservation.

    - Better communication between elected officials and their constituents

A representative is only as good as the feeling of approachability  his constituents feel. Open communication through town meetings, email, web sites, etc. foster positive and constructive relationships.

  3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money? (Response should include $______________ for ________________________________.

    $35-50 million
    25 million
    $25 million

    higher education
    transportation
    on-going educational funding
