- What are the duties of the Lieutenant Governor?
The Lieutenant Governor, at the discretion of the Governor, leads state efforts concerning homeland security, transportation, water and rural affairs issues.
In addition to these appointed responsibilities, the Lieutenant Governor of Utah is statutorily responsible for: Elections Administration, Lobbyist Activity, Document Authentication, Notaries Public Political Subdivision Certification the Utah Commission on Volunteers the Utah Commission on Civic and Character Education and other administrative functions.
- As director of State Elections, what steps would you take to (a) increase voter participation in elections and (b) ensure that elections fairly and accurately represent the will of the voters?
I will make sure that poll workers are educated on the rules and processes required to ensure fair voting. Furthermore, I will encourage voters to register for the permanent Vote by mail campaign that allows for a more convenient method of voting and ensures that elderly and infirm voters who may not be capable of traveling to polling locations can participate in the election process.
As Chief Elections Officer, the Lt. Governor holds the trust of all Utahns in his/her hands. It is critical that the Lt. Governor act appropriately without political bias. There must be complete transparency in all actions taken by this office. I will diligently make sure that regardless of the political race and candidate that all election laws are followed and I will immediately investigate any accusations of electoral misconduct.
