Questions
The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.
1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a member of the House of Representative for the people of Utah?
Improve quality of life by ensuring funding of development projects
2. How would you address the following issues? (Please answer each question in 200 words or less.)
-Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates
Adequate funding for education: review needs of public education, review available budget, determine which programs need priority of funding. Determine what percentage of the student population falls in the disadvantaged population category and find reasonable funds to address their problems.
- Energy resource development and clean air
Promote industries that research and develop alternative, clean fuels. Encourage the use of public transportation and other alternative transportation means (walking, bicycles, car-pooling) to reduce fluid emissions. Require air pollution inspection in vehicles to ensure reduced emissions.
- Water development and conservation.
Review the Utah Water Plan to determine the short- and long-term water requirements particularly for the Wasatch Front (Brigham to Provo), and how those demands will affect other areas of the State, particularly the Bear River Basin of which Cache Valley is part. Promote the research of better means of water allocation to attend to future demand. Strongly promote water conservation among citizens.
- Better communication between elected officials and their constituents
Since
Utah
is among the best Internet-connected states, I will create an immediate-feedback online communication system, with public input polls, to get information from constituents about the issues discussed in the legislature. This, besides full access to my phone number, fax number, and traditional means of communication.
I will also advocate, in the long run, for a constitutional amendment to change the legislative schedule to a year-round format, with one weekly meeting, and online committee meetings as needed, instead of cramming the legislative work into a 6 week period at the beginning of the year.
3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money? (Response should include $______________ for ________________________________.
$ 20 million for infrastructure maintenance, $ 50 million for public education, $ 30 million for higher education. Education is the best investment in economic growth, and a safe environment for our growing state.
