Questions
The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.
1. Whatedoes the State Attorney General do?
Utah Law states the Attorney General is responsible for a great number of things, including to: "Prosecute or defend all causes in which the State or a state agency is a party, Act as supervisor to district and county attorneys within the state, Give opinions on questions of law to state agencies, officers, boards, commissions, and to county or district attorneys, Prosecute corporations which act illegally, Administer the Children's Justice Center program, Investigate and prosecute complaints of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of patients at health care facilities that receive payments under the state Medicaid program."( Utah Code Annotated §67-5-1). These are just a few of the things the Attorney General's Office does.
2. As Attorney General, what would be your highest priorities?
My highest priority is that to which I've sworn a solemn oath: protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the constitution and laws of the State of Utah . My primary responsibilities will always be protecting the State of Utah and its citizens from criminal elements, whether that be eliminating mortgage and other types of fraud, ridding the state of meth labs, eliminating access to alcohol for youth and protecting our children online from predators. One of the things I will focus on in my next four years as Attorney General is to focus against fighting drug use, not just illegal drug use but prescription drug abuse. This is an area of great concern and a problem which is rising at unprecedented levels. With four more years as your Attorney General I will continue to protect families and children throughout our state.
