Questions
The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.
1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a member of the House of Representative for the people of Utah?
First I would like to increase funding for public education.
Second, I would like improve the transportation and highway systems, reducing the need for fossil fuels, increasing usage of alternative energy sources.
2. How would you address the following issues? (Please answer each question in 200 words or less.)
-Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates
The funding for education is available and there needs to be a reprioritization of the available funding without adding additional burden to the taxpayers.
- Energy resource development and clean air
The air quality along the Wasatch Front continues to get worse and has been declared as some as the worst in the
United States
. We need to develop the alternative energy resources like solar and wind.
Utah
has a vast expanse of real estate that could be used for such endeavors. Our mass transit systems need to be developed to exclude fossil burning fuels and run on clean energy. The mass transit systems need to be expanded so that there is access between communities to reach major shopping, healthcare facilities, and recreational activities.
- Water development and conservation
Communities who have taken steps to conserve their water resources should be protected from state agencies wanting to transfer the water to fulfill land development in other communities.
Utah
's water needs to remain in
Utah
and in the communities the water is store. Better conservation efforts are still required.
Utah
is a desert state; with growing population, citizens need to be educated to conserve water even in non-drought years.
- Better communication between elected officials and their constituents
I would like to promote a team effort between officials and the constituents. There isn't any requirement for a state legislature to hold closed door sessions. The public has a right to know what the legislature is considering. The people's voices have a right to be heard. We cannot afford to have the minority with money providing the only input for the state's decisions.
3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money? (Response should include $______________ for ________________________________.
75 million - Education
25 million - Mass Transit
