Questions
The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.
1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a member of the House of Representative for the people of Utah?
My two major priorities as an elected official will be to first, set limits that property taxes can increase in one single year, so people are not forced out of their homes and second, mandate that all healthcare providers post pricing. Price sheets create competition which we badly need in our health care system.
2. How would you address the following issues? (Please answer each question in 200 words or less.)
-Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates
I believe education to be the key stone to our successful society. Adequately funding education must be based on the needs of
Utah
students, not arbitrary budgetary goals.
I have many goals for education; please visit my web site to view more of my stands on education. www.openshawdistrict11.org
I do not support school vouchers.
- Energy resource development and clean air
I support Governor Huntsman's efforts to expand the development and use of renewable energy sources before our finite resources are depleted. The governor's policy on renewable energy emphasizes both the environmental and economic benefits of positioning ourselves as leaders in the development of clean, renewable energy. I love the freedom cars offer me and I would add to the Governor's plan a strong emphasis on renewable resoures that will continue transportation freedom.
- Water development and conservation.
The Central Utah Water Project (CUP) in our state has been a great success. I would use that program as a template in other regions of our state.
- Better communication between elected officials and their constituents
As we look at the recent school voucher issue it is evident that many of our elected officials are out of touch with their constituents. When elected I would like to create an online blog. This will allow me to post questions to my constitutions about legislation that I am working on. This will give my constituents the opportunity to participate with their government in a more direct manner.
3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money? (Response should include $______________ for ________________________________.
$100 million
I agree with Warren Webb as he stated, "The definition of a surplus is money that was unexpected and not budgeted. This money comes from the taxpayers. It was in excess of what was needed to run the state. It should be returned to the taxpayers. It was not a gift nor a prize given to the Legislature to do with as they pleased. It belongs to the citizens and the Legislature is morally obligated to return it."
Opponents:
- Becky Maddox (C)
- Brad Dee (R)
The Central Utah Water Project (CUP) in our state has been a great success. I would use that program as a template in other regions of our state.
