Questions
The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.
1. What are the major issues facing the State School Board today?
The major issue facing the board is how to carry out the job outlined in the mission statement: "Provide leadership, vision and advocacy so that all students have educational opportunities to meet thier potential and achieve competency." This continues to require the board to work in the following areas:
1. Ensure that Utah citizens continue to recognize the critical role of public education in the state.
2. Ensure that Utah is ready to devote the financial resources needed to ensure that all students are well educated and competent to work when they leave the system.
3. Ensure that studetns at risk of failure because of poverty, disability or lack of English language skills be given the attention and financial support needed to help them succeed.
4. Ensure that Utah's 550,000 (approx.)students find themselves in safe and clean classrooms with competent and commited teachers.
5.Ensure that Utah's 30,000 (approx.) teachers and school staff members are recognized as professionals and supported in that capacity.
2. What is your position on these issues?
Many issues, those included above and those still unknown, will face state school board members in the coming years. My position on any and all of them is to take a practical, no-nonsense look, do a good evaluation of the issue with the best information available, make an honest decision, and move forward.
