Questions
The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.
1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a member of the House of Representative for the people of Utah?
Establish access to effective health care for all Utahns through a combination of public and private sources.
Establishment of usury laws that protect consumers with a minimum impact on business concerns.
2. How would you address the following issues? (Please answer each question in 200 words or less.)
-Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates
Education needs to be more of a priority in this state. We have gone many years neglecting our educational systems and cannot expect to get them on track by just bettering the previous year's appropriation. Increased education for the non-mainstream populations will ensure better assimilation as people have enhanced opportunities for employment and participation in our democracy.
- Energy resource development and clean air
Alternative energy sources should be promoted and encouraged with such vehicles as state tax incentives. Use of Public transportation should be encouraged and standards for fuel efficiency should be raised. Making all these goals priorities will have a positive impact on energy resource development and clean air.
- Water development and conservation.
This is a critical area for the State. Long term planning needs to be instituted that can balance water-wise planning with established patterns of use such as flood irrigation. Water conservation should be encouraged through education and incentives. Additional resources must be made available to recycle toxic waste that would otherwise enter our waterways or permeate ground water. reserves. More research is needed into use of toxic chemicals that control problems with irrigation systems but pollute our waterways.
- Better communication between elected officials and their constituents
Legislators need to have regular meetings and mailings to constituents. E-mail updates and blogs are also important to keep constituents informed. Legislators could also utilize the local newspapers to regularly inform community members of issues that are being examined. I plan to use all of these approaches in my representation of the Fifth District.
3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money? (Response should include $______________ for ________________________________.
$20M for Emergency Fund.
$30M for Public Education.
$5M for Medical/Dental benefits for Elderly, Poor and Disabled.
$5M for LeRay McAllister Fund (Conservation Easements).
$15M for Infrastructure Repair.
$15M for Transportation.
