Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a state representative for the people of Utah?

I hope to decrease the environmental footprint throughout the state

I have a plan to address the growing healthcare concerns of Utahns

2. How would you address the following issues?

  • Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates

All schools should be equally funded on a per-capita basis by the state.  If private entities wanted to give money to local schools after that, it would be possible.

Those individuals who do not speak english should have equal access to schools throughout the state as well, large poplulations of non-native speakers would have the ability to form state funded schools just as english speaking communities can.

With education being a fundamental principle of prison reform within the department of corrections, it must be adequately funded so that each indivdiual incarcerated will have the greatest chance to once again become a strong memeber of society.

  • Energy resource development and clean air

t is not the role of the government to force its citizens to conform to it's ideals, but to inpsire them to action.  This being said, I would offer incentives and taxbreaks for using machines, cars, and appliances that reduce emmissions.  The same can be said for communities that use newly developed and environmentally sustainable programs.

  • Water development and conservation

The first thing we must do is to develop natural ecological zones throughout the state so that they do not use any more water than what is naturally provided by the environment.  This alone would greatly reduce the amount of water used throughout the state.

  • Better communication between elected officials and their constituents

Communication between elected officials and constituents is one of the basic ideas this nation was founded upon.  That being said, in many countries heads of states are made to answer those they represent.  It should be no different for state or local representatives.  I would create a forum in which I would answer questions of those consituents that may be curious about specific issues once a month as well as posting the questions and answers on my website.

3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 millions, how would you allocate the money?

Creating an environmentally sustainable region that is beautiful, pragmatic, and not wasteful.

Opponents:

  • Rebecca Chavez-Houck (D)
  • Joe Jarvis (R)
