Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a state senator for the people of Utah?

1.Education - Give local school districts greater control, reduce class size and increase teacher compensation

2. Economic Development - avoid excessive government regulation that can strangle business and stifle job creation.   Improve the quality and availability of career oriented technical education, promote Utah's highly educated workforce and quality of life to attract higher paying jobs

2. How would you address the following issues?

  • Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates

Currently 100% of the state income tax and corporate franchise tax is dedicated to educating our children. On the local level the majority of property tax is dedicated to public education.   The best way to fund education is through economic development.   The more we grow our economy the more funds will be availabe to educate our children.   That's why economic development is one of my goals in serving on the Utah Legislature.

  • Energy resource development and clean air

Clean air will come as we transition from fossil fuels to clean forms of energy.   Government should give tax incentives and provide more leadership.   We also need to continue to promote an integrated system of commuter rail, light rail and mass transit systems.

  • Water development and conservation

We live in an arid climate, water conservation is key to having sufficient water for future growth.   Government policies encourage water consumption.   This mindset simply has to change and government policies need to be more aligned with conservation principles.

  • Better communication between elected officials and their constituents
My relationship with my constituants is very close.   I communicate through questionairs, emails and answer most concerns through personal communication.

3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 millions, how would you allocate the money?
The majority of any surplus should go to education and the rest should fund growth in essential state programs.

Opponents:

Carole E. Peterson - Democrat

Brent Zimmerman - Libertarian
