Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a state representative for the people of Utah?

1) I will continue to fight for a more equitable Property Tax System that will prevent people in our State from being taxed out of their homes. I am a proponent of the consumption tax that will collect as people spend not on what they own.

2)I will continue to push for better pay for our teachers and at the same time make them more accountable to the parents that pay the salaries.

2. How would you address the following issues?

  • Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates

As a member of Public Education appropriations I can say we never have and never will have enough money to fund all good projects including those for non-English-speakers and a host of others.

What we can do is continue to fund the most critical needs and other programs that the local districts participate in. We are at a level where property tax levy's can not be raised and we must do more with less.

  • Energy resource development and clean air

I fully support all efforts to use our State's natural resources for the development of energy sources. The State is in a good position to capitalize on our oil shage and tar sands and we must encourage private delvelopment of these resources with tax credits and other incentives to private not public entities.

  • Water development and conservation

Water is the life blood of our state and no one knows how much we have left. Conservation from our current residents must be a top priority.

Development of new resourcs must be encouraged by use of less regulation and State red tape that hinders private development of this valuable resource.

  • Better communication between elected officials and their constituents

I have excellent communication with my constituents by using survey's and emails to communicate together with town meetings. I depend on my voters to keep me informed and updated on critical issues as they view them.   Every elected official in my opinion should put communication at the top of their list but it needs to be an individual decision not a state mandate.

3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 millions, how would you allocate the money?

Rainy Day fund for Education. This was done in 2008.
