Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a state representative for the people of Utah?

First I would work to get the bans lifted in order to work our very abundant ENERGY resources. A great number of jobs would be created and we would reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Money would flow to beef up our infrastructure and support our education systems.
Next priority would be to develop our water resources.

2. How would you address the following issues?

  • Adequate funding for education, including funding for disadvantaged populations such as non-English-speakers and prison inmates

I have taught school in many districts, some with a lot of funding and some that had to be very careful with what little they had. Funding is just one of many factors for success, and with the development of our resources we can very adequatly fund our needs.

  • Energy resource development and clean air

With today's technology and restrictions there is very little chance for messing up the environment when developing the resources. We have very clean coal with little emission problem here in Utah, for example.

  • Water development and conservation

I worked for 3 years mapping the water uses throughout the State for the Water Board, and know first hand that water is a precious thing here in the arid west. There are many things that can and must be done toward better use of our limited supply.

  • Better communication between elected officials and their constituents

Some officials do better than others and I would hope to be in that category. There are bunches of people with many different agendas, and it is a big job to hear and respond to all of them.

3. If the State had a revenue surplus of $100 million, how would you allocate the money?

$90 million
education and highway 6 with the balance for emergency.
